The Care Leaders Learning

Training for the people around children in care

Courses for schools, social workers, foster carers, residential staff and leaders, delivered by people with lived experience of care and professional experience of the work. A real story, the evidence behind it, and tools your staff use the next day. Face to face, live online and on demand.

How we facilitate training

Every course runs one of two ways, and follows the same learning framework.

6 hours

Face to face

We come to you for a training day, usually 10am to 4pm, for up to 60 people. There is time for every story and every activity, and to start using the tools together.

2 hours

Live online

A session on Teams or Zoom for up to 200 people, covering the core of the course, with breakout rooms for the activities. The workbook and online course take people deeper afterwards.

Our learning framework

  1. Story

Every part opens with a story told from a child’s or young person’s point of view. Lived experience of care sits alongside professional experience of the work, so the subject feels real from the first minute.

  2. Theory

The evidence behind the story, explained simply, so people understand why something happens and not just what to do about it.

  3. Action

A tool, a rewrite or a plan people practise in the room and use with children the next day.

Every delegate gets a workbook to keep, the online course for 12 months, the session recording for 12 months and a certificate of completion. Looking for something that runs over weeks or months? See our programmes. Want Luke Rodgers BEM to speak at your event? See his keynotes.

    Why train with us

There are plenty of trauma-informed trainers. Very few have lived the care system and led it.

Lived and professional experience, in every room

People who grew up in care and people who have led children’s services design and deliver every course together. Not a guest speaker: the whole course.

    Story, theory, action

Every session opens with a real story, adds the evidence behind it and ends with a tool people use the next day.

    Built inside real services

Our courses were made with councils, schools and children’s homes: NVR in 11 Durham homes, and around 490 school staff signed up in Kent.

    Close to national policy

Luke Rodgers BEM led engagement on the DfE’s rewrite of the national fostering standards. We have worked with 36 local authorities, and with national bodies including the Department for Education.

    Built for your service

Every course is shaped around your team, your procedures and your children. If we do not have it, we build it.

    Recognised for it

Children & Young People Now Workforce Development Award 2023, and iESE Gold for Dual Perspective Leadership in 2026.

    For whole teams and organisations

Most of our learning is bought by organisations for their people: virtual schools for their schools, fostering services for their carers, councils for their workforce. Teams of five or more can learn together on the platform, and whole organisations can take a licence. Ask us what fits.
